Decoration tips for the children's room

Is the first child on the way? Time to prepare the nursery. Cozy and gentle but also practical and functional. We'll give you tips on how to set up the nursery!

Inredningstips till barnrummet

Decorating a children's room starts for most couples already during pregnancy. Some of us experience a stage often described as the "nesting phase" where we clean and rearrange as if everything absolutely has to be ready by the time the baby arrives. It might never be completely ready, but it is certainly a way to mentally and practically prepare for what is to come!

We collected a few decorating tips for the home fixer and for those not naturally gifted with a perfect aesthetic eye.

The first tip is to create a photo bank with the kind of interior pictures and details you like, and preferably write down why you are saving this picture.

The Red Thread

Once you have collected some pictures, let’s say at least 30 pieces. Then go through your album and look for the common thread. What common denominators do you find? Is there any picture that clearly stands out? Remove it then. The same goes for pictures that basically show the same thing with a small twist; choose the one you prefer more and remove the others.

Look again at the pictures that passed the screening and write down the following things:

- What do you like in the pictures? What is the color scheme like? What are your favorite pieces of furniture and their arrangement? What function should the room have?

The list might look like the example below:

My Favorite Ideas for the Children's Room

- Color scheme: White, black, yellow and blue accents

- Storage baskets, shelves on the wall, and some pictures

- White Roman shade

- A black ceiling lamp

Making such a "childishly simple" list might feel redundant but the simplicity often helps us stick to the plan; it prevents a lot of impulse buys! :-) When browsing various online stores or visiting physical interior shops, it's then easy to ask yourself: Is this part of my plan? That's why the list should be simple, so you remember it.

If you are unsure about your own choices and perhaps feel like you might change your mind soon, a safe tip is to choose timeless classic colors and shapes for the large and expensive elements such as flooring, walls, and furniture. For it's undeniably easier to change cushions and curtains than to change flooring.
